Changes to HDR Support and Conference Grants Scheme

Do you know about some important changes in Eligibility Criteria for the scheme?

  • Students must have attended at least 70% of research seminars hosted by their department and 70% of Seminars organized by the faculty for HDR students. Where extenuating circumstances exist, you can apply to the Faculty HDR Director to have these requirements modified, eg for off campus and part-time students
  • Where a student is applying for funding to attend an international conference, the student must present their research paper in an internal seminar prior to the conference.
  • Where a students is applying for funding to attend a conference or an external workshop, the activity must be recorded in the students’ (https://www.deakin.edu.au/students/research/course-content/individual-learning-plan)

 

Under the Scheme, HDR students may apply for funding up to a maximum of $8,000 per student over their candidature. More than one application may be considered, provided that the maximum funding limit has not been reached.

Funds may be granted toward expenses such as:

  • Conference attendance – to present a paper. Reasonable travel, registration, accommodation may be funded.
  • Data collection
  • Surveys
  • Specialist software essential to the research and not otherwise available to the student (student licence only)
  • Professional editing and proof reading of papers for submission to journal editors for publication in A, A*, and A** journals. Applications for editing funds for jointly authored papers will be considered on a case by case basis. Funding awarded for this purpose is capped at $500. Papers for publication must fit within the plan for completion of the degree, taking into account any further requirements for funding support.
  • Professional editing of the final draft of the thesis prior to submission for examination. Funding awarded for this purpose is capped at $1,000.

(NOTE: Primary carers are also eligible to apply for the separate Vice Chancellor’s Conference Care Fund for up to $2,000 to cover additional care responsibilities associated with attending a conference. Applications should be submitted at least 4 weeks prior to travel. Faculty HDR funding approval must be received before travel to receive funds. Please see VC Conference Care Support Fund section).
