WLC Internships – Carrington Courtney

I’m in my penultimate year of a Bachelor of Arts degree (majoring in Literature, minoring in Media Studies).

Last year, I was looking to fill my pre-planned Trimester Abroad units that unfortunately weren’t fulfilled due to COVID-19 travel restrictions. Still wanting a positive and real-world experience, I looked on DeakinTALENT and found a few internships related to writing to choose from. Although I’d never heard of copywriting before, I applied for a remote internship with a Melbourne-based firm called Well Versed. I was very nervous for my interview even though I had thoroughly researched the business and all about the copywriting profession. I was taken off guard when I was asked to write a blog with a 20-minute time limit, but I surprised myself and was offered the position of intern.

I learned so much about writing for web, business, and adhering to SEO requirements throughout my time with Well Versed. My mentor, Felicity van Rysbergen, offered me an ongoing and paid position once my time as an intern had concluded. One year later, I’m still working for her on an ad hoc basis and looking at expanding into my own side hustle for extra work.

I was so pleased with my experience at Well Versed that I sought out another internship this year. I was very excited to be hired as a Digital Content intern by the Australian Local Government Women’s Association, Victoria (ALGWA Vic). I worked closely with their Executive Officer, Michelle Kleinert, to complete various design and marketing projects throughout my time as an intern. It’s been very encouraging to have someone such as Michelle oversee my internship considering her position as Councillor, background as a City Mayor, and wealth of knowledge in local government. Her passion goes to show how ALGWA Vic is dedicated – even to their interns – in ensuring their mission and vision stays true.

I was delighted to intern with an association such as ALGWA Vic because the need to represent and support women in government needs to begin at a local level. I’m proud to continue with ALGWA Vic as a volunteer and am looking forward to this experience very much indeed.

I would highly recommend including an internship within your undergraduate degree, if you can. I feel confident that once I’ve finished up with classes at the end of this year, I’ve made the meaningful connections and gained the necessary experience to begin a rewarding career in arts.
