Sue Chen: Chinese Children’s Literature – 28 Feb – Doncaster Library Talk

As part of the 2019 Chinese Reading and Writing Festival, Writing and Literature staff member Sue Chen will give a talk at Doncaster Library on 28 February. Sue’s presentation, titled “Australia in Early Chinese Children’s Books and Magazines”, builds upon her research discoveries as a 2017 National Library of Australia Fellow.

At this free event, Sue will share the fascinating story of how tales about Australia featured in Chinese children’s books in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. She will explore how Australia was depicted to children in magazines and books published in the late Qing and early Republican era, and how texts and cultures travelled between Britain, America and China during a period of uncertainty and political unrest in Chinese history.
