“No Shortcuts” – Briohny Doyle & Jodi McAlister – Writing Careers
Staff members and accomplished authors Briohny Doyle and Jodi McAlister recently shared some valuable tips on developing a writing career with Deakin’s career-advice website, THIS.
“There are different paths for different kinds of writing,” said Dr Doyle. “If your dream is to write the next Australian literary masterpiece, then you need to work on the quality of your writing.” That means reading, practising your writing and honing your research skills.
“The most important thing about writing isn’t talent,” said Dr McAlister. “It’s discipline. If you can’t sit down and do the work, you won’t get anywhere. Sometimes you feel like you’re smashing your head against the wall, everything you write is garbage, but you’ve got to persevere. Eventually you’ll find a way through.”
