Maria Takolander
Maria researches and teaches in creative writing and literary studies. Her publications include three poetry collections, most recently Trigger Warning (UQP 2021), and a collection of short stories, The Double (Text 2013). She is the author of a monograph, Catching Butterflies (Peter Lang 2007), and numerous scholarly articles and defining book chapters on magical realism, including in Magical Realism and Literature (Cambridge Critical Concepts 2020) and The Palgrave Handbook of Magical Realism in the Twenty-First Century (Palgrave Macmillan 2020). She has also published various scholarly articles theorising creativity, particularly in relation to mental health and embodiment, and is co-editor of The Limits of Life Writing (Routledge 2018).
Maria has won a Faculty award for research supervision and pioneered the 1-year PhD by Prior Publication for established writers. She is a regular interviewer at literary festivals and events, having interviewed writers such as Peter Carey, Helen Garner, Marcus Zusak and Christos Tsolkias. She is also a regular reviewer for The Saturday Paper.
