Lyn McCredden – Exhibition: The Model Citizen – 7 Feb-23 March
Professor Lyn McCredden, Head of the Writing and Literature Group, is one of several Deakin staff appearing in a new multidisciplinary art exhibition, The Model Citizen, at RMIT Gallery. Curated by Sean Redmond and Darrin Verhagen, The Model Citizen runs from 8 February–23 March, and includes a curators’ talk, artist panels, and an opening night shindig.
The time has come to decide what sort of citizens we want to be. From harvesting the data of the dead to hybrid bio robot citizens, the high stakes are explored in this compelling new exhibition. Are you a model citizen? Meet the micro lenses of surveillance and audit culture; the algorithm of benign search engines; the political poetry of embodied dance; the veneer of the celebrity citizen; the performative monotony of routine; the bio-power of the viral robot; the ghostly noise of a thousand newsreaders speaking all at once, and the hopeful threads and fibres of participatory culture.
The exhibition features a diverse bevy of creative artists, many hailing from Deakin’s School of Communication and Creative Arts. The line-up includes Asim Bhatti, David Cross, Larissa Hjorth, Leah Kardos, Jondi Keane, Bronek Kozka, John McCormick, Lyn McCredden, Shaun McLeod, Rowan McNaught, Olivia Millard, Adam Nash, Patrick Pound, Sean Redmond, Sadia Sadia, Polly Stanton, (((20hz))).
Lyn is collaborating on an artwork that combines her own poetry with expressive movement by dancers Olivia Millard and Shaun McLeod. The opening night speaker is Dr Drew Berry, Biomedical Animator at The Walter and Eliza Institute of Medical Research.
