Andrew Dean launch of Metafiction and the Postwar Novel
Why and how do writers write about writing?
Andrew Dean’s book Metafiction and the Postwar Novel examines self-reflexivity in the form of the novel after 1945. He examines the work of three major career authors, J. M. Coetzee, Janet Frame, and Philip Roth. Drawing on archive work across multiple countries, and a range of new and previously unpublished material, Metafiction and the Postwar Novel shows how writers turn inwards in order to address issues in culture, politics, and their own public receptions. The book shows the intimate emergence and potential value of this seemingly abstract ‘postmodern’ kind of writing.
The LAUNCH event will feature short responses from Julia Jordan (UCL), Alys Moody (Bard College), and Nicholas Wright (University of Canterbury, NZ). It will be chaired by Patrick Hayes (Oxford). Following the responses there will be an audience Q&A.
This book is published by Oxford University Press.
