Please note: This course is an external course – it is not offered or funded by Deakin. The University of Melbourne's Tertiary Education Management graduate courses Opens in a new window aim to address the increasing need for specialist knowledge and skills in tertiary sector leadership and management. From academics to administrators, this program will prepare you to confidently lead people by enhancing your management capabilities. You will also develop the competence to plan and implement strategic change initiatives that make a transformative difference within tertiary education institutions. You will gain comprehensive knowledge of established frameworks for organising, leading and managing in the higher education (tertiary) sector through a flexible, interactive and 100% online program. Applications are currently open to study in January, April, July and October 2020.

This two-day course is designed to equip professional managers with the knowledge of key people management policies at Deakin.

Unconscious Bias
Face-to-face, 2.5 hours.
Have you ever wondered why we make the decisions we do? Using a range of engaging methods, this course will examine the impact of our unconscious biases and thinking styles on our everyday decisions, including those involving recruitment and team fit at work. We will explore how to surface and counteract those biases to ensure we make sound decisions. To prepare for the program, we suggest you explore the range of implicit association tests at https://implicit.harvard.edu/implicit/australia/takeatest.html

Diversity and Inclusion
Face-to-face, two hours.
Do you know the difference between equal opportunity, diversity and inclusion? This course explores terms, concepts and inclusive language as well as the ‘new rules’ of diversity and inclusion and how Deakin’s values support diversity and inclusion. Participants are encouraged to consider how to incorporate more inclusive behaviours in the workplace.

Equal Opportunity refresher
Face-to-face, two hours.
This course complements and extends the online compliance training using interactive activities including scenarios to consolidate knowledge and generate discussion. It aims to assist participants to identify, prevent and respond to behaviours that could lead to discrimination, sexual harassment and victimisation and other unacceptable behaviour in the workplace.

LGBTIQ+ Awareness
Face-to-face, 2.5 hours.
Confident that you can explain the LGBTIQ+ acronym? This course unpacks the LGBTIQ+ acronym, articulating the differences between sex, gender identity, gender expression and orientation. Participants will also gain an understanding of why LGBTIQ+ workplace inclusion is important, hear about the impact of not being inclusive and learn about key moments in Australian LGBTIQ+ history. Information Deakin’s LGBTIQ+ community and the ways allies can get involved will also be presented.
