About Nourished @ Deakin

Nourished@Deakin is all about helping you cook healthy, delicious and budget-friendly food. Launched originally in October 2021, content was created as part of a Food and Nutrition Practicum by two Bachelor of Nutrition Science students, Chelsea and Alessia. A second practicum by students Shannon and Leah, in conjunction with Diabetes Australia, has extended the recipe collection further.

Chelsea and Alessia undertook the Nourished @ Deakin project as part of an initiative of Deakin’s Student Health Promotion Plan, in partnership with Deakin’s Campus Services, aiming to enhance students’ knowledge and skills in food and cooking literacy.

One of the things we loved about being part of this project is that we’ve created a resource for students, by students. We really hope you enjoy everything we’ve put together for you, and that you feel inspired to cook some delicious, healthy food! – Chelsea and Alessia

The recipes were carefully selected from leading health organisations, including The Heart Foundation (AU & NZ)Diabetes AustraliaNutrition AustraliaDietitians Australia and Eat For Health. The aim was to offer healthy, sustainable, delicious, balanced and affordable options, with each undergoing evaluation using theHealthy Eating Advisory Servicetool,Food Checker*. Four of the recipes include instructional videos delivered by Chelsea and Alessia with some help from Waurn Ponds Estate Executive Chef, Adam Draper and include some tips and tricks to guide you with your cooking.

Meet Chelsea, Alessia and Adam!

Other resources have also been provided to enhance students’ knowledge and skills in food and cooking literacy. These cover a range of topics, from the Australian Dietary Guidelines, to Food on Campus and the Deakin Community Garden, plus many more.

We hope you find a favourite recipe and that we inspire you on your cooking journey!

*The Food Checker, enables people to check their foods and drinks against government guidelines for long day care, schools, retail food outlets, catering and vending machines. The Food Checker is brought to you by the Healthy Eating Advisory Service, and delivered by Nutrition Australia, and supported by the Victorian Government.
