Welcome to Nourished @ Deakin

Explore our student-picked range of quick, healthy and delicious recipes and resources.

Whether you are interested in healthy eating, need some cooking inspiration or just want to know more about how Deakin University is supporting students’ health and wellbeing – you’ve come to the right place.

We are Chelsea and Alessia, two 3rd year students completing our Bachelor of Nutrition Science at Deakin. Alongside our studies, we have undertaken a placement project as part of an initiative of Deakin’s Student Health Promotion Plan and in partnership with the Campus Services. The project aims to enhance students’ knowledge and skills in food and cooking literacy and has involved us in creating this resource to inspire students to cook and eat healthier meals.

Here you will find 13 carefully selected recipes from leading health organisations, including The Heart Foundation (AU & NZ), Diabetes Australia, Nutrition Australia, Dietitians Australia and Eat For Health. We aimed to make all the recipes healthy, sustainable, delicious, balanced and affordable, with each undergoing evaluation using the Healthy Eating Advisory Service tool, Food Checker.

The Food Checker, enables people to check their foods and drinks against government guidelines for long day care, schools, retail food outlets, catering and vending machines. The Food Checker is brought to you by the Healthy Eating Advisory Service, and delivered by Nutrition Australia, and supported by the Victorian Government.
Of these 13 recipes, you will find four with an instructional video delivered by us with some help from Waurn Ponds Estate Executive Chef, Adam Draper, including some tips and tricks to guide you with your cooking.

Finally, we have also put together a few resources to support the recipes and the videos. These cover a range of topics, from the Australian Dietary Guidelines to Food on Campus and the Deakin Community Garden, plus many more.

One of the things we love about being part of this project is that we’ve created a resource for students, by students. We want to thank all the students that were involved in answering our survey – your feedback helped to inform everything we have included within this blog. We really hope you enjoy everything we’ve put together for you, and that you feel inspired to cook some delicious, healthy food!
