What is the Indigenous Direct Admissions Program (IDAP)?

The Indigenous Direct Admissions Program (IDAP) is an on-campus experience for prospective Indigenous students which is a pathway to enrolment in one of Deakin University’s courses at NIKERI Institute.

The week-long on-Country immersion experience assists prospective students in preparing them for their future university learning journey at NIKERI Institute through the Community Based Delivery Model (CBD). It is a great enabler to assist attendees in gaining an understanding of university study expectations, build relationships with staff and other future students and offers tailored support for completing the entry task and interview process with NIKERI Institute. The program includes learning opportunities, yarning circles with academic staff, on campus tours, group activities and cultural excursions on Wadawurrung Country.

When is the 2024 program?

IDAP will run from Monday November 25th to Friday November 29th 2024. For attendees who are not local to Geelong, travel may be required outside of these dates (eg. Saturday/Sunday before and after the program).

Where is IDAP held?

The program is hosted at NIKERI Institute which is located on Deakin University Waurn Ponds Campus in Geelong, Victoria. During the week, attendees with stay at NIKERI’s Kitjarra Residences which are located across campus from the institute building.

All transport, accommodation and meals during the week are included in the program.

What will you do during the program?

Throughout the week, you’ll have the chance to complete all admission requirements for NIKERI Institute, including the Entry Task Essay and interviews. You’ll also have the opportunity to meet all the staff here at NIKERI and enjoy excursions exploring the stunning landscapes and ocean breaks of Wadawurrung Country, along with engaging cultural workshops and activities.

Who can attend?

The program is open to all prospective Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students from across Australia (17 years of age and over). Once prospective students have completed an online application form for NIKERI Institute they will be invited to attend the Indigenous Direct Admissions Program.

How much does it cost to attend?

The program is fully funded. All transport (including flights), accommodation, meals and activities are fully covered for the duration of the program.

Can I still study at NIKERI in 2025 if I don’t attend IDAP?

Yes. The program is designed to give prospective 2025 NIKERI students an understanding of what to expect as a student, however it is not compulsory. We encourage prospective students to come and experience on campus life while completing the assessment tasks (short written piece and interview) that are required for enrolment into NIKERI Institute however if students are unable to attend, all entry tasks are able to be completed at home.
