Stories in Teaching (6): Dr. Susan Keller – Game Based Learning

Dr Susan Keller is a Lecturer in the School of Information and Business Analytics.  Susan has been using game-based learning to provide students with a deep understanding of business processes in the context of a unit on Enterprise Systems.  Susan has applied an experiential instructional approach using a game-based strategy as a learning platform where students use learning props such as paper‐based business documents and physical ‘warehouses’ to experience first‐hand the data, material and document flows associated with business processes.

Students play in teams and take on roles which represent the functional areas of the business such as purchasing, sales, warehouse, production and accounting, as well as external customers and vendors.  The team is presented with a scenario within a fictional company and individuals must respond to triggers within their own functional area and work with the other functional areas to complete the business process cycle. The games provide students with an opportunity to gain a thorough understanding of the important role enterprise systems play in integrating the many business processes within an organisation and provide scaffolding for students to learn the complex industry-standard Enterprise System, SAP.
