The National Congress of Australia’s First Peoples is building a national platform for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders. The Congress was created in April 2010 to give Aboriginal and Torres Strait peoples a say on issues important to them and to create a national voice for those opinions to be heard by all Australians. The members page contains a host of organisations for potential internships.


Australia for Native Title and Reconciliation (ANTaR) http://www.antar.org.au/
ANTaR is a national advocacy organisation dedicated specifically to the rights – and overcoming the disadvantage – of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. They target many areas of complex and interrelated issues, including health, constitutional recognition, imprisonment rates, violence and abuse, discrimination, native title, reconciliation, stolen generation, employment and economic development, self determination, education and housing.

The Aurora Project http://www.auroraproject.com.au
The Aurora Project was established in 2006 as a result of a report into the professional development needs of lawyers at Native Title Representative Bodies. Over the years it has grown to encompass other projects in the broader area of Indigenous education and Indigenous affairs generally. Aurora offers internships in the areas of law, anthropology, social sciences and business. Much of their work aims to strengthen Indigenous organisations by supporting their staff and facilitating opportunities for all Australians to work in these organisations.

Oxfam Australia http://www.oxfam.org.au/
One of Oxfams many campaigns across the globe is here in Australia. Oxfam is part of the Close the Gap coalition calling on governments to take action to achieve Indigenous health equality within 25 years. The objective of the campaign is to translate the public support, political will and historic mood into sustained improvements in Indigenous health to close the gap within a generation. Oxfam offers internships and volunteer positions which can be quite competitive.
