Top tips: Deakin’s amazing study support services!
Inclusive teaching means ensuring students have access to resources to help them achieve their full potential. At this time of the trimester when students are busy researching, writing and preparing to submit final assessments, some may still have questions about how to meet specific requirements.
This is the perfect time to remind them about Academic and Peer Support (APS)—known as Study Support to students—which offers resources to help improve their end of trimester results and learning experiences.
Reiterate to your students that it’s never too late to utilise the help offered by Study Support, either on campus or online. This is what they can do:
1 One-on-one appointments
Helpful Language and Learning Advisers are available in person for face-to-face meetings or by phone or Skype and short query emails. Staff can meet the team here.
2 Online study skills resources
Comprehensive web resources include academic skills guides, Deakin’s go-to guides for referencing, UniStart, and Higher Degree by Research (HDR) support.
3 Online English language programs
A range of online tools, guides and programs are designed specifically to support those needing help with English language development.
4 Peer support
Writing Mentors and Maths Mentors can assist with writing assignments or mathematics help. The Student Helping Students Hub provides academic, practical and social support by students who can relate to other students’ needs.
5 Find Study Support on Deakin Sync
Students can find everything they need to know about the Study Support service in Deakin Sync under the tab ‘Studying’. Staff can click on ‘Settings’ (top navigation bar) and select ‘Student View’.

But there’s more! Did you know…
Staff are welcome to discuss with the APS team how to embed academic literacies development for your discipline within a unit or course. The Academic and Peer Support staff site provides information and examples on how members work with academic staff to assist all students to gain academic language and learning skills, enhance academic achievement, and develop Graduate Learning Outcomes.
See FAQs for further information about how the APS team can assist you in your teaching.
