Program

Communication is a core clinical skill that is essential to the delivery of safe, high-quality care and can be developed and improved with practice, reflection, lifelong learning, mentorship and support.

This intensive program will focus on refining core skills and conducting complex conversations for chronic and life-limiting illness such as shared decision-making, lifestyle behaviour change and end-of-life discussions.

This residential session will be held at Waurn Ponds Estate, tucked away on Deakin University’s Waurn Ponds Campus. The Estate is surrounded by a beautiful, distraction free rural environment only 1 hour from Melbourne and 30 minutes’ drive from Avalon Airport. An outdoor solar heated pool and spa, gymnasium, tennis courts and walking tracks provide an enriched experience along with local and regional produce to nourish and sustain you throughout your stay.

During the masterclass participants will :

  • Engage in structured reflective writing activities to consider personal communication challenges, options for improvement and strategies to implement action into clinical practice
  • Gain awareness of the evidence-based frameworks and models to support effective clinical consultations
  • Review the strategies to invite the patient to participate in decision-making and elicit goals and concerns as part of the decision-making process
  • Develop skills to observe and deconstruct consultations by analysing patient-clinician interactions
  • Develop strategies and practise responses for communication challenges pertinent to communicating risk, discussing prognosis and future care plans
  • Apply new skills by engaging in experiential learning with simulated patients and contribute to group experiential learning opportunities
