Develop great academic skills

To succeed at your studies, it’s important to work on your academic skills.

Your academic skills will allow you to achieve the requirements of your assessments. You’ll develop them over the course of your degree. They’ll help you produce high-quality assignments and avoid plagiarism and collusion.

Academic skills are things like planning your work, conducting research, critical thinking, note taking, editing your work and referencing.

Here are three ways you can work on your academic skills.

  1. Read our online Academic Skills Guides. We’ve got them on every aspect of your studies. Remember, a great way to connect with more people is in our online spaces, and this guide has some useful tips to help you communicate effectively.
  2. Check out UniStart, our online orientation platform, especially the ‘My first trimester’ and ‘Study strategies’ sections. If you’re a postgraduate student you can join Preparing to Succeed.
  3. Get assignment and study help. You can chat online to a Language and Learning Adviser, a Writing Mentor or Maths Mentor, or use Smarthinking, Deakin’s online tutoring and writing feedback service. Everyone is ready to help with your academic work.
