Prof Bernard Rolfe is an innovator in materials and manufacturing and an influencer in mobility engineering. He is also the Associate Dean Research for the Faculty of Science, Engineering and Built Environment. He is responsible for the administration, strategy, and development of research and research training in the Faculty. The Faculty consists of four schools (Architecture and Built Environment, Engineering, Information Technology, Life and Environmental Sciences) and has over 400 academic staff and a HDR cohort size of 600 plus candidates. He is also a Professor (Advanced Manufacturing) in the School of Engineering at Deakin University. His qualifications include a combined Economics and Engineering degree with honours in 1995 from the Australian National University (ANU), and a PhD in Advanced Manufacturing (ANU) in 2002). He then embarked on a career in business and technology consulting with Andersen Consulting before returning to the ANU to complete a PhD in Advanced Manufacturing (ANU) in 2002. He joined Deakin as Lecturer in 2005, and his research group has spent the past two decades working on the use of advanced metals in sheet forming primarily for the automotive sector, and the past decade investigating Design for Additive Manufacturing and topology optimisation. In 2021 Bernard was the leader for the unsuccessful Regional Advanced Manufacturing Cooperative Research Centre bid, which consisted of 63 partners (85% are SMEs), $36M in committed funds over 7 years, $38M in requested funds from the Dept of Industry, and $150M in total project value. His current research focus is the design and forming of lightweight structures. He is also investigating design techniques for production and repairing of parts using additive manufacturing. Bernard has received four Vice Chancellor awards and has been part of over fifteen successful nationally competitive large research grants, totalling over AUD $30 million in awarded funds. He has published over 190 refereed research articles.
