Every team member at Deakin Res has an important role to play in helping our residents to feel welcome, safe and supported. Over the course of the year, we’ll be introducing members of our Deakin Res team, highlighting their roles and responsibilities, the journey they’ve taken to working at Deakin and sharing some of their experiences and anecdotes. This week we’d love you to meet Angela, Revenue and Reservations Officer at the Geelong Waurn Ponds campus.

Tell us a little bit more about your role and responsibilities?

You’re unlikely to see me around Res or at Reception, but I am here behind the scenes, busily typing away processing student and company invoices, accounts and responding to enquires. Part of my responsibility also involves assisting with Deakin’s off–campus housing service, HouseMe, which connects students and off–campus housing providers, external group accommodation bookings and short stays for Deakin students and staff.

We’ve had anyone and everyone including those involved with the Cadel Evans road race, Korean Baseball and various school and sporting groups.

What led you to working at Deakin and in student accommodation?

My experience with Deakin started a long time ago when I studied a four-year double degree. Although I had other options my goal was to be employed with a company of which I could be proud, and Deakin really matched my values. I really love being able to provide that extra reassurance and assistance to new residents and their parents during what can be a slightly nerve-wracking period.

Can you describe a typical day in your role?

It is quite varied and can include anything and everything from accounts processing, off campus housing matters, and short-stay enquiries.

What is your favourite part of working for Deakin Res?

I would have to say the Deakin Res team. I get to work with people whom I may not have met otherwise.

Deakin Res employs a bunch of great people, and we’re all different, but all focused not only on your experience as a resident, but also in supporting each other.

What’s been a memorable moment from your time working at Deakin Res?

I remember one resident telling me how much she learnt from her housemates and how much they were having an impact on her values.  Living on res gave her the opportunity to connect with people with different perspectives, and she felt she wouldn’t have gained this insight if she hadn’t left her ‘home’ bubble.

I also have a fond memory of the last residential ball I attended when I looked around at everyone socializing and I felt like the relationships that our residents made were really beyond friendships, more like family. It truly makes you appreciate the bonds students make living on campus and how much they lean on other when away from home.
