Did you know that Deakin Res also provides short-term accommodation for Deakin student’s in fully furnished self-contained rooms on all of our campuses. So if you’ve got a professional experience placement or internship coming up as part of your course, or simply need a nights accommodation here or there avoid the hassle of searching through hotel or Airbnb listings. Instead, check out these budget-friendly, stress-free alternatives!

We recently caught up with two nursing students, Harriet and Zoe, who took full advantage of the flexible options on offer, accessing Deakin’s short-term on campus accommodation at our Burwood campus whilst completing their placements in Melbourne.

Why did you decide to live on campus as part of your placement?

Harriet: I live on a small farm 45 minutes north of Bendigo in central Victoria and had lived on campus for the few weeks before COVID hit earlier in the year. I felt like it was a very convenient option where I knew I would be able to park my car, wash my clothes and be able to come and go without disturbing anyone.

It is also in a great location, quite close to the hospitals at which I was undertaking my placement and it gave me comfort to be able to stay somewhere that I was familiar with, being so far from home.

Zoe: I chose to live on campus during placement for a multitude of reasons. It was fairly central, felt safe, the rooms were super comfortable nd it was very well priced for the amount of time I needed to stay and amenities that I required.

What were the benefits of living on campus during your placement?

Harriet: The benefits included have the option to live in a self-contained unit (so that I didn’t disturb anyone else with my early starts and late returns), the convenient location being quite close to my placement and only a couple of minutes from a supermarket, the ability for me to easily wash my uniforms and clothes using the communal laundry and finally, being able to park my car for free in an undercover car park.

Zoe: It was a 20-25 minute drive to placement so it was in a very convenient location, the staff were always super helpful when I needed help, the rooms were comfortable to come back to when I’d finished placement for the day, the building is accessible at all hours so there was no worry about how I’d get into my room when I had a later shift, and being on res gave me the opportunity to explore various parts of Melbourne on my days off.

Would you recommend living on campus to other students on placement? If so, why?

Zoe: Definitely! It’s good value for money, safe, welcoming and comforting having your own place away from home that’s private and secure.

Harriet: I would recommend it because it is simple and stress-free! Everything is provided for you including basic cooking utensils, towels, linen, etc. There is plenty of parking if you have a car with you or else it is also a very easy pick up point for Ubers or Taxis. There’s also good access to public transport only a walking distance away.

What advice would you provide to students who might be interested or considering staying?

Harriet: I would advise other students to either email or call the reception if they had any questions because they are always very helpful. I would also recommend looking on the Deakin Res website as there’s lots of information there to help you decide whether it will suit you. Checking out the travel time between Deakin and my placement also helped me to decide. Ultimately I would say just do it.

it’s a fun experience living on campus, giving you a taste of the ‘Resi’ lifestyle and there is a good chance you will bump into and meet other students also completing placement while you are there!

Zoe: Living on campus provides a great way to meet people from other degrees that you probably wouldn’t have crossed paths with. It’s super easy to get across to campus and there’s a good balance between freedom and having your own space, but also the comfort of knowing that security and staff can help you whenever needed.

How it works

Deakin Res has a range of accommodation options available to suit course requirements. Students and staff can contact directly to discuss and book accommodation. Short stay options are available at all campuses, although room types and availability vary, and are subject to the relevant COVID-19 restrictions at any given time.

We provide all bedding and linen, and – bonus! – cleaning is included. There’s free wi-fi, while kitchens are fitted with basic cooking packs and have fridges, microwaves and ovens.

We don’t offer room service or wake-up calls but there’s heaps of other benefits, including the opportunity to meet other students undertaking similar placements. But don’t just take our word for it – hear from some students who’ve used this accommodation during their placements:
