It was during her studies at Bendigo Senior Secondary College that Joelle realized she wanted to become a secondary school teacher. Joelle had developed a particular passion for history and Indonesian, and had undertaken a variety of leadership roles at school and in her community, all of which reinforced her desire to work with young adults and help play a role in shaping their future.

To achieve this dream, Joelle had her heart set on studying at a university in Melbourne and really wanted to move out of home, meet new people and make new friends.

I had originally listed Deakin as my second preference (behind the University of Melbourne) but then I attended the university Open Day...The campus was just really social and inviting. I toured the res precinct and one of the Residential Leaders showed me around and made me feel really welcome.

Joelle immediately went home and placed Deakin as her first preference. She moved to Deakin and on campus to Deakin Res the following year to study a Bachelor of Arts/Teaching.

Now commencing her second year of study, Joelle notes that she “…loves how close [Deakin Res] is to university facilities and services” and enjoys being in an environment where she is surrounded by fellow students with likeminded interests. Shared study and learning spaces are also a benefit. “I love hanging out in the common room, it’s really open and inviting. You can sit down and someone will come for a chat and to study at the same time.” She adds, “living on res has also allowed me to get help when needed quickly and easily.”

She’s also enjoyed the social aspects of life on campus. “I love movie nights and the trips we’ve made to the Queen Vic Market, and living on campus has also meant that I’ve been able to attend plenty of University events too.”

Joelle describes her time thus far at Deakin, and living on campus as “amazing, fun, and welcoming.”

I met so many new people and am good friends with those I shared an apartment to this day.

She’s also looking forward to what 2021 brings as she takes on the role of a Residential Leader this year, helping other students to transition to university life and their new home.

Joelle encourages any student potentially interested in studying and living at Deakin to chat to a resident or staff member, go for a visit and tour. Speaking to current students and visiting Deakin “…really changed where I wanted to study and where I wanted to live.”

If you’re interested in finding out more about opportunities to live on campus at Deakin, get in touch with your relevant campus. Deakin Res also offers virtual tours online and webinars where you can hear from and speak to current residents about their experiences.
