At Deakin Res we’re really passionate about student support and student leadership. When thousands of our new residents arrive on campus they’re not only greeted by our Reception and Campus Life staffing teams, but also by our volunteer student Residential Leaders.

These students were selected on the basis of their engagement with and contribution to our campuses, and their enthusiasm and commitment to making sure every resident has a fantastic experience during their time living at Deakin Res.

Our Residential Leaders play four key roles in our community:

Firstly, they’re here to provide transitional support, acting as the first point of contact for all residents.

Secondly, they uphold and role model our RESPECT values and rules, encouraging collective responsibility for the fostering of a healthy, happy and safe community.

Thirdly they play a key role in recognising and referring student safety, welfare and behavioural concerns to Campus Life staff

And finally, they support our staff in planning, facilitating and promoting the diverse range of activities, campaigns and events as part of our annual student experience calendars.

To ensure they’re set up to do the best job possible, they’ve already been provided with a comprehensive leadership training program which has included Mental Health First Aid, First Aid, Bystander Intervention and Scenario Training, Respectful Relationships, RESPECT Values, Diversity and Inclusion and Drug and Alcohol education and awareness, amongst plenty of other topics.

Katie, one of our Warrnambool RL’s highlights that she’s most looking forward to

…meeting new people, making a positive difference and helping new students navigate their first year as a friend and leader.

Celia, an RL in Burwood, is also excited for the year ahead and the opportunity to “…show new ressies just how amazing life on campus is,” whilst Kade at Waurn Ponds is keen to “…work alongside other RLs to make the year a memorable one for all living on campus.”

Our Ressie Leaders are champions of our community, ensuring our residents are warmly welcomed, feel safe and comfortable in their new home. Incoming students will have the opportunity to meet their Residential Leader on Check-In Day and throughout the residential Orientation program.

Be sure to say to hello and introduce yourself – they can’t wait to get to know you better!
