Why You Need an On-Campus Experience in 2021

If ever there was a year that you needed an on-campus experience it’s in 2021. By applying to live on res, you’re effectively putting yourself in the box seat for the full campus experience as it ramps up throughout the year. Not yet convinced? Here’s another couple of reasons why living on campus, and being at the heart of Deakin, is the best decision you can make this year:

A Chance to Form Meaningful Relationships

Let’s be honest, 2020 wasn’t exactly the year we had all hoped for. For the large part we were stuck inside our own homes and confined to our computer screens. It didn’t exactly make it easy to meet new people or make new friends! Whilst a lot more activity is soon to be taking place in regards your academic studies, wouldn’t it be nice to actually connect with people in your course and from a wide variety of backgrounds face-to-face?

Living on campus means that you’ll have the opportunity to not only be a five minute walk from your lab, tutorial or workshop (and the local coffee shop!) but you’ll have the chance to form study groups, meet up to cram for an exam together, or catch up for a debrief after your latest lecture.

When you’re done with study for the day, you’ll have the chance to head off to the gym, go for a walk around campus, cook a meal together, or binge the latest must-watch TV series. Best of all, you’ll be making REAL connections with people – well beyond what would be possible through a chat room or your online study platform when everyone’s logged off for the day.

Learn New Skills and Find New Passions

2020 was the year we all apparently learnt to bake banana bread or crochet. So why not make 2021 the year you find new passions. If you live at Deakin Res you’ll have the chance to try out a raft of new activities and projects both on campus and in your local area with your newfound friends and flatmates. We’ve got so much excitement planned this year – think outdoor cinemas, magic shows, lawn games, fitness classes, drumming workshops, city tours, arts and craft, live music events and SO. MUCH. MORE (we can’t even contain our own excitement about what’s ahead this year!).

Check out the Deakin Res Instagram page for a taste of what’s to come!

Find Your Independence

If you weren’t baking banana bread last year (guilty as charged!), then maybe it’s a skill you might want to add to your repertoire? Living away from home for the first time will provide you with an excellent opportunity to get the hang of that cooking business (beyond just 2 minute noodles!). Many students establish their own cooking groups, taking turns to prepare a meal each night of the week, which is a great way to not only hone your cooking abilities, but to get to try out some amazing recipes other residents have brought from home.

Being away from your parents will provide you the chance to develop your independence, make your own decisions, solve your own problems and generally become a better human/functioning member of society (ok, we can’t guarantee that last point, but our ressies are pretty cool people, just saying).

Create Lifelong Memories

Was it just me or was everyone else’s Instagram accounts a little quiet last year? Time to add some colour. Trust us, your feed is going to look a whole light brighter from the minute you step foot on res at Deakin on Check-In Day. There’s truly an Insta-worthy photo around every corner and at every event.

So why not make up for missed time and create those lifelong memories you’ve been craving for the past year?

Better still, why not make some lifelong friends that you’ll continue to catch up with decades down the track to reminisce about those lifelong memories?

Why not join in the fun?  To apply, or to find out more, go to www.deakin.edu.au/live
