Held each year from 27 May to 3 June, National Reconciliation Week (NRW) is a time to reflect, learn and take meaningful action towards reconciliation with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
This year’s theme is ‘All In’, calling for all Australians to commit wholeheartedly to reconciliation every single day.

What’s on at Deakin
Weaving connection, culture and community in our libraries
To commemorate NRW, the Deakin Library is hosting a series of drop-in basket weaving workshops led by First Nations artists across all campuses. Join us at these relaxed sessions for the opportunity to learn directly from artists, engage with cultural knowledge and storytelling, and create a small woven piece to take home.
No bookings are required – simply drop in. Each workshop runs for several hours and you can join at any time.

‘Reconciliation – Is there still room on the bus?’ webinar
The Office of Indigenous Strategy and Innovation will host a one-hour live webinar exploring the legacy of the Freedom Rides and their relevance today. Professor Mark Rose will be joined by Bridget Sancho and Adam Davids for a conversation on their enduring impact and what they mean for reconciliation today. The discussion invites us to consider how the legacies of Rosa Parks and Charlie Perkins continue to shape progress and dialogue.
The webinar will be held online from 1.30-2.30pm on Wednesday 3 June.

Celebrating First Nations voices through art
The Deakin University Art Gallery will also be showcasing a stunning selection of contemporary artworks by First Nations women from southeastern Australia in its online gallery space in recognition of NRW.
Featuring 34 works by 13 artists – including Maree Clarke, Hayley Millar Baker, Vicki Couzens, Marlene Gilson and Lisa Waup – the exhibition highlights the strength, resilience and cultural knowledge expressed through contemporary First Nations art practice.
Now open, the exhibition will continue throughout NRW and NAIDOC Week (5-12 July 2026), with no set closing date.
