Dispose of your vape safely on campus and quit for good
Thinking about quitting vaping, or even just cutting back? You’re not alone – and support is available when you’re ready. Getting rid of your vape can be a powerful first step.
If you’ve got a vape you don’t want anymore, you might be wondering what to do with it. Throwing it in a regular bin isn’t the best option – vapes contain batteries and chemicals that can be harmful to people and the environment if they’re not disposed of properly.
As part of Deakin’s commitment to a smoke-free and vape-free campus, safe vape disposal bins are now available on campus, making it easier to dispose of your vape responsibly and take that next step forward.
Where to find the disposal bins
You’ll find a safe vape disposal bin at the following locations:
- Burwood: Central Precinct, Building HF (near Student Central entrance)
- Waurn Ponds: Level 1, Building JB (across from Union Green Kitchen)
- Waterfront: Level 2, Building D (across from lounge area beside Student Central)
These bins are designed specifically for vapes, so you can dispose of them safely and with confidence.
Why this matters for your health and the environment
Vapes are often marketed as harmless, but the reality is more complicated. Many contain addictive nicotine and toxic chemicals that can impact your health, focus and energy levels. Nicotine reaches the brain within seconds, which is why vapes can be highly addictive and difficult to quit without support.
Vaping can also increase your chances of taking up smoking, making it harder to quit long term. And it doesn’t just affect you – second-hand vape aerosol can expose people around you to harmful chemicals too.
They also come with an environmental cost. Vapes aren’t just another piece of rubbish – they often contain:
- lithium batteries (which can cause fires if damaged)
- nicotine residue
- chemicals that shouldn’t end up in landfill, including heavy metals and other toxic substances
Disposing of your vape the right way helps protect the air you breathe, the spaces you study in, and the wider environment. It’s a simple action that supports both your health and your campus.
If you want to better understand what’s actually in vapes and how they affect your body, the UNCLOUD campaign breaks it down in a clear, easy-to-understand way.
Support is here to help you quit
