Sustainability is one of our core values at Deakin and we are committed to advancing sustainability through quality education, sustainable campus operations and research. 2025 was an important year for delivering on our sustainability commitments.

Some highlights for 2025
Here are just a few highlights of the many things we’ve achieved towards sustainability in 2025.
Achieving energy and emissions target
We successfully achieved our 2025 energy and emissions target to mitigate all Scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions.
This was made possible through a combination of onsite renewable energy generation at the Waurn Ponds microgrid, Deakin’s ongoing participation in the Melbourne Renewable Energy Project, renewable electricity supply contracts, facility energy efficiency upgrades and the purchase of high-quality carbon credits. Together, these initiatives ensure that all electricity used across Deakin’s campuses is from 100 percent renewable sources.
Waurn Ponds Creek planting
We planted more than 50,000 trees, shrubs and grasses across 8.1 hectares along the Waurn Ponds Creek – extending the biodiversity corridor that links the campus wetlands with the creek, boosting ecological health, improving water quality and expanding habitat for two of our focal species: the Swift Parrot and the Yarra Pygmy Perch.
Simulation Centres waste initiative
Recognising the global challenge of hospital waste, the Nursing and Midwifery Simulation Centres waste initiative diverted waste from landfill. The initiative also inspires students to think creatively about sustainable practices in clinical environments.
Going forward
For 2026 and beyond, it’s important to acknowledge the role universities play in advancing knowledge and developing the skills our society needs to thrive in an ever-changing world. Deakin is committed to continuing to support a sustainable and prosperous future.
