Deakin Economics students stand out in Treasury Case Competition Finals
We’re excited to give a huge shout-out to our Economics major students – Jeremy Firman, Roberte Brookes and Lydia Woolston – for making it all the way to the Finals of the 2025 Treasury Case Competition: Addressing Australia’s Housing Affordability Crisis.
This national competition is no small feat. More than 30 teams from universities across Australia threw their hats in the ring, and only five made it to the Final round – and yes, our Deakin team was one of them! Students were asked to unpack Australia’s housing crisis from an economic perspective and pitch practical, evidence-based policy ideas to help make housing more affordable.
Professor Ching-Jen Sun shared that the team’s report stood out for its smart use of economic theory, analytical tools learned in class, and solid empirical evidence. Their submission dug deep into the real causes of the housing crisis and offered a thoughtful policy framework that balanced economic, social and fiscal impacts.
What really set their work apart was its fresh, integrated approach – blending macroeconomic and tax reforms with smarter land-use planning and even AI-powered strategies to improve housing development. It’s an impressive example of just how relevant and future-focused our Economics education is at Deakin.
Professor Ching-Jen Sun (CJ), Associate Professor Aydogan Ulker and Dr Ha Vu from the Department of Economics joined in celebrating the team’s incredible achievement – pictured below.
