Spotlight on FoodProtect: Deakin’s 2024 OnCampus Champions
To inspire you to compete and showcase what’s possible, let’s reflect on FoodProtect, Deakin University’s 2024 Hult Prize Campus Round winners, whose journey exemplifies the transformative power of this competition.
FoodProtect comprised Deakin students (pictured) Agnes Ruramai Mukurumbira (PhD), Akansha Gupta (PhD), and Penny Thew (Honours) who designed a fridge prototype to reduce food spoilage.
Following their Campus Round win, FoodProtect progressed to the international summit in Thailand, where they competed alongside the world’s brightest student entrepreneurs.
Agnes’ reflection: A scientist’s transformation
‘The theme, Unlimited!, felt both liberating and challenging,’ Agnes shared. ‘It allowed me to think beyond strict scientific protocols and take a broader view of how innovation can address real-world needs. I began evaluating ideas not only for technical feasibility but also for sustainability and social impact.’
I learned the art of storytelling—how to break down complicated ideas into clear, impactful messages.
‘It showed me that science and innovation make the biggest difference when shared and translated into real-world solutions.’

Agnes reflected: ‘The Hult Prize expanded my perspective as a scientist. It gave me a renewed sense of purpose that goes beyond the lab, emphasizing our responsibility as researchers and innovators to make a difference.’

- Ensure your idea is a for-profit business aligned with at least one SDG.
