Celebrating our Business and Law Mentors: building belonging and community

Want to make more friends, grow your network and give back to the Business and Law community in 2026? Apply now to become a Business and Law Peer Mentor.

We’d love you to join up—you just need to be a current Business and Law student who has successfully completed four units with a Weighted Average Mark (WAM) of at least 60.

Why should I become a mentor?

Becoming a mentor is more than guiding new students on their study journey, it’s about connection, community, and creating a sense of belonging at Deakin. Mentors play a vital role in helping others feel supported and confident as they settle into uni life.

Mentoring will also benefit you. You’ll build valuable skills in communication, problem-solving, and leadership, while expanding your professional and social networks. These are the kinds of qualities that give you a competitive edge that employers are looking for.

What’s involved?

For the first five weeks of Trimester 1, you’ll co-mentor a small group of new students — either online or on campus. You’ll also connect with others in the program through group meetups and shared activities. Before you begin, you’ll attend a training session to get all the info you need and meet fellow mentors.

It’s not just about the sessions, it’s about being part of something bigger. In Week 1, we kick things off with daily Café Catchups at 2pm, offering a relaxed way for students to meet and settle in.

Eligible students may also apply for the $700 Volunteer Mentor Support scheme. Hear from peer mentor Klay about how the scheme enhanced their experience as a faculty peer mentor.

Meet our Trimester 2 Mentor Award Recipients

We celebrate each trimester with an awards ceremony to acknowledge our Outstanding Mentors who are nominated by their peers and program staff. All mentors also receive a Certificate of Recognition — great for your resume!

Featured below are our Trimester 2 2025 Volunteer Mentor Awards recipients who were recognised for their outstanding contribution.
