So, what’s it like being a Maths Mentor, you ask?

Hear from some of our current Maths Mentors about what they enjoy about this role!

Why did you want to become a Maths Mentor at Deakin?
Growing up, I always found trigonometry and calculus really interesting. However, I wasn’t able to take up maths units at university because of my major, so being a Maths Mentor allowed me to still continue exploring these topics but in a way that helped other students; a win-win! – Viv

What are your favourite things about being a Maths Mentor?
I will never get over seeing the joy and relief of students when they finally understand difficult maths concepts. It’s such a rewarding experience and knowing that it is a free resource for students makes it even better. Each session also challenges me to become better at communicating and problem solving; as much as we help the student learn, we are also learning and bettering ourselves as mentors which is also one of my favourite parts of being a Maths Mentor.

The team culture as a Maths Mentor is also lovely – the collaborative environment is incredible as each Maths Mentor has their own strengths, which when combined, helps make each drop-in session really productive. Knowing that I always have people to bounce ideas off of, who similarly have the students’ best interests at heart is what makes being a Maths Mentor invigorating. – Viv

Why were you interested in being a Maths Mentor?
I’ve always liked maths. I saw it as some sort of puzzle that I am eager to complete. It’s the curiosity of finding that final answer and the ability to mentor and explain the thought process that motivated me to be a Maths Mentor. – Christina

I really love the idea of helping people learn more about maths and felt it was good if I want to get into the educational space. – Trill
