Shining a light on mental health at our Warrnambool Blue Tree Project event
As we reflect on another R U OK? Day – during which we were reminded it’s important to check in with others around us Any Day – we encourage you to continually spark important conversations with those around you about how they may be feeling.
This year, we’re also shining a light on the Blue Tree Project, a charity working to increase awareness and break the stigma surrounding mental health issues. The initiative was inspired by Jayden Whyte, who died in 2018 at the age of 29. Years earlier, Jayden had secretly painted a tree bright blue on his family’s farm to surprise his dad. That playful act became a powerful symbol at his funeral and has since grown into a global movement.
Last year, as the first university in Australia to do so, Deakin joined the project by launching three blue trees on the Waurn Ponds Campus, creating permanent reminders that no one is alone in their struggles. These trees are conversation starters, encouraging us to check in on each other and speak openly about mental health.
Now, it’s Warrnambool’s turn.
Be part of the unveiling at Warrnambool
We invite the Warrnambool community, all students, staff, family and friends to a special community event to mark the unveiling of two new blue trees on the Warrnambool campus. Together, we’ll reflect on the meaning behind the project, hear from two of our brave student lived experience storytellers, and enjoy afternoon tea while decorating a plant pot to take home.
