What would you put in a time capsule? Deakin wants to know!
Have you ever thought about what future Deakin students might find fascinating, or hilarious, about your life right now? Well, here’s your chance to make history.
As part of Deakin’s 50th anniversary celebrations, the University is creating a time capsule, and they’re inviting students to add items to go in it.
Wait, what’s a time capsule?
It’s a collection of items, memories or digital keepsakes that are sealed away and opened, in this case, decades later. It’s how people in the future can see what life was really like now.
Deakin’s capsule will be opened in 2075, 100 years after the University was founded. That means current students (you!) have the chance to show the future what 2025 was all about.
Your Deakin experience, immortalised
We’re looking for items that capture what it’s like to be a student in 2025, think small but meaningful.
Whether it’s your emotional support Stanley Cup, that DUSA hoodie you wore on repeat, or even the TikTok audio that lives rent-free in your brain, we want to hear about it.
This isn’t just for students either – Deakin alumni, kids (aka future students), and even the University’s leadership will also be contributing. Four lucky students will get the chance to pick an item to go into the capsule. You could be one of them.
What makes a good time capsule item?
Here are a few things to keep in mind:
- Items can be digital or physical, including clothing, images, CDs, letters, but remember future tech may not be able to read our files or play our reels.
- Size matters, think pocket-sized. Smaller than the Deakin Cube, bigger than a pen.
- And most importantly, make it fun and meaningful. If it represents your student life, it could belong in the mix.
How to get involved
To express your interest, just email your idea to deakin50@deakin.edu.au by Friday, 19 September 2025.
In your email, tell us a bit about yourself – what you’re studying, whether you’re a domestic or international student, which campus you study at, and what item you’d include (in 200 words or less).
If you’re selected, you’ll hear from the team in October. The time capsule will be sealed later this year and opened in 2075, 100 years after Deakin first opened its doors.
So, what part of your 2025 will you leave behind?
