Explore Deakin Warrnambool’s history and deep ties to the local area

In celebration of Deakin’s 50th anniversary, the Deakin Warrnambool Library is hosting an exhibition celebrating the history of the Warrnambool Campus.

Through archival treasures, personal stories and pioneering research, Roots of Resilience captures the enduring spirit of innovation, inclusivity and resilience that defines Deakin Warrnambool and its deep ties to the natural and social landscape.

History of our coastal campus

The campus’s evolution from the Warrnambool Institute of Advanced Education (WIAE) to its 1990 merger with Deakin is reflected in the passionate stories, memories and artefacts from community members.

Roots of Resilience presents a snapshot of this campuses rich and varied history and explores student life, the strong sense of community, and initiatives like the Deakin Engagement and Access Program (DEAP) and the Mentors of Deakin program (MoD squad) that support rural and underrepresented students.

In response to potential closure of the campus, the community rallied with unwavering determination, filling a town hall meeting to capacity. Their passionate advocacy not only preserved the campus but reaffirmed the University’s vital role as part of Warrnambool’s identity and its future.

The exhibition also highlights Warrnambool’s research contributions, from regional healthcare innovations to clean energy advancements at the Hycel Technology Hub – Australia’s first hydrogen fuel cell research facility, developed in consultation with members of the Peek Whurrong, Gunditjmara/Maar Nation and Keerray Woorroong, Yorta Yorta, Maar Nation.
