Why joining a Deakin sporting club could be the best decision you make this trimester
Starting uni or returning for a new trimester? It’s the perfect time to explore something beyond the classroom – and joining a sporting club is a great place to start.
At Deakin, our student-run clubs aren’t just about competition. They’re about community, wellbeing and personal growth. Whether you’ve played your sport for years or you’re trying something for the first time, there’s something for everyone.
For
Ananya Krishna, the Deakin Table Tennis Club (DTTC) has been a huge part of their university journey. Ananya founded the club in 2022, originally stepping into the role of President. Now, she’s the clubs Treasurer and also coaches.
Ananya’s involvement in the club has been more than just a hobby, it’s shaped her experience at Deakin. It has motivated them to come to uni more often, which has helped with their study schedule and grades. It also made socialising easier, giving her a stronger network of people and a real sense of community at uni.
Through the DTTC, Ananya has helped create a supportive, inclusive space where players of all backgrounds and skill levels can come together through casual games, structured coaching and friendly intervarsity tournaments. “Table tennis is a sport that can be played by anybody” she says.
I have built friendships over the last three years through the club that I still value!

This year, Ananya took their sporting journey a step further by joining the City of Whitehorse Women in Sport Leadership Program, a unique opportunity for students involved in club leadership to grow their skills and network with others in the field. Ananya was one of four Deakin students selected for the program, making up 20% of all participants.
As someone with experience in both coaching and club management, Ananya saw the program as a way to deepen her understanding of what makes a great leader.
Her advice for students thinking about stepping up in a club leadership role? “Go for it! There is so much to learn by being a leader.”
