Active April: join our fun events to fit more movement into your day
We all know that exercise is good for us, but life can sometimes get in the way. Even though daylight hours are growing shorter and assignments are starting to roll in, it’s still important to find ways to keep moving every day for optimal health – just like you commit to your study routine.
Finding an activity you enjoy is vital. You can stay active in so many ways – from skateboarding, jogging, playing a team sport to simply walking the dog.
It doesn’t necessarily have to be a big deal. Committing to just 30 minutes of daily exercise (even incidental movement like strolling around campus or parking further away and walking the last leg to class) can improve your energy levels, mood, sleep quality and study efforts, and hopefully spur you on to commit to healthy new habits!
Get active with us this April!
Supporting the Victorian Government’s Get Active Victoria campaign, at Deakin we too want to encourage everyone to move more for better health, and so next month we’re hosting a range of free Active April activities – both online and on campus – to get you out of your chair and having fun with your fellow students.
Aim to complete at least 30 minutes of exercise each day – every little bit of movement helps you hit that goal! We predict you’ll finish the month feeling great and energised to tackle your assessments.
- Get moving with a DUSA club. Play badminton, go for a social run, bust out some dance moves or get ducking, dipping and diving at a game of dodgeball! Our DUSA social clubs are hosting a great range of activities so you can mingle as you move – you might even discover a hidden talent, exciting new hobby or uni pals along the way!
- Try a free DeakinACTIVE fitness class or hit the gym. During April, DeakinACTIVE is offering 10 free gym visits, free lunchtime group fitness classes, yoga, plus free body scans and health consultations. Check what’s available at your campus and get moving!
- Get some steps in while you make new friends at Walk n Talk. Join a guided campus stroll with our Wellbeing Ambassadors, enjoy great chats, and score a free Deakin hat on your first walk. Attend three weeks in a row for a $5 beverage voucher!
- Can’t make it to campus? DeakinACTIVE is hosting free online wellbeing classes during April and beyond – tune in to unwind with yoga and pilates classes from the comfort of home.
- Join the DeakinWELLBEING Active April Step Challenge. To help keep our Deakin community active, we are encouraging staff and students to join in and help us reach our goal of 500,000 steps collectively across all campuses! Download the app to join in.
- Win prizes in the Active April Treasure Hunt. Get your steps up and moving across campus as you search for treasure – keep an eye out during the first week of April for the first clues and announcement of the prizes!
