What is self-care and why is it Important?
Self-care isn’t just bubble baths and face masks (though those are great, too!). It’s about making intentional choices that support your overall wellbeing—physically, mentally, and emotionally.
University life can be exciting, but it can also be overwhelming. Between deadlines, part-time jobs, social commitments, and just figuring out adulthood, it’s easy to put yourself last. That’s where self-care comes in. It’s about regularly checking in with yourself and doing things that help you recharge, feel good, and prevent burnout before it happens.
According to the Black Dog Institute, self-care is an essential tool for maintaining good mental health and building resilience. It helps regulate stress, boosts mood, and improves focus, making it easier to stay engaged in your studies and social life. When you prioritise self-care, you’re investing in your future wellbeing—not just putting out fires when things get tough.
Think of self-care like keeping your phone charged. If you run on 1% all the time, eventually, you’ll shut down. But if you regularly recharge—through rest, movement, healthy boundaries, and meaningful connections—you’ll be able to take on challenges with more energy and confidence.
