Types of programs
You can choose from two types of short-term programs:
- Short-term partner programs – Intensive study abroad opportunities at host universities, which run for 2–6 weeks.
- GEL Internships/Social impact programs – Get real-world work experience overseas by undertaking a short Work Integrated Learning program.
Commerce/PR student Chloe, who undertook a trimester exchange to Denmark, explained how living overseas and meeting new friends in Cophenhagen for six months changed her life:
This unique experience has played a pivotal role in my personal growth and broadened my understanding of diverse cultural lifestyles. I will never forget the relationships I made with the other abroad students living in my student accommodation. This adventure has taught me the value of saying yes more often in life and actively pursuing opportunities.
Global Experiential Learning (GEL) programs
Deakin offers three types of GEL programs:
- Work-integrated learning – undertake an internship and gain real-world experience with leading companies around the world.
- Social Impact programs – support the development of a community overseas.
- High Achievers programs – selective ad hoc programs which are offered to high achieving students to undertake research and prominent internships.
Health student Kate had the opportunity to participate in a GEL Think Pacific Internship in 2023, and had this to say of her experience studying abroad:
Just do it! It is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that will change you as a person for the better. You learn so much about the culture and yourself as a person.
