Student athletes make Matildas debut!
Congratulations to Deakin elite-athlete students Leah Davidson, Laura Hughes and Winonah (Wini) Heatley on their Matildas debut in recent months!
Leah Davidson, a Bachelor of Exercise and Sport Science student, made her debut for the Matildas on December 4 in Melbourne, contributing to their 3–1 triumph over Chinese Taipei in an international friendly. She followed up with a standout performance on 7 December in Geelong, opening the scoring with a brilliant header in the sixth minute—her first goal for the Matildas.
Current Bachelor of Exercise and Sport Science student and midfielder, Laura Hughes, made her debut on 7 December in Geelong, also facing Chinese Taipei.
Wini Heatley, a Bachelor of Laws student, marked her debut as a defender for the Matildas on October 29, playing a key role in their 2–1 victory over Germany—their first win against the team in 19 years.
The Geelong match was particularly special as all three Deakin athletes took the field together, helping the Matildas secure a 6–0 win over Chinese Taipei in front of a crowd of 30,000 fans.
Well done Leah, Laura and Wini! We’re incredibly proud and look forward to seeing your continued success on and off the field.
