Campus update: Watch out for snacks, snakes and upgraded spaces!
If you’ll be spending time at our Australian campuses, as we enter these warmer months, there’s some updates you should be aware of.
You may see an increase in the number of snakes and the places you can buy snacks. One of these offers tasty treats, while the other are wildlife you should be cautious and respectful of, so please don’t mix them up!
We are also making improvements to learning spaces in Building B on Burwood Campus.

Snacks!
Where?: Burwood, Waurn Ponds and Waterfront campuses
What?: New vending machines have been installed at the Geelong and Burwood campuses.
If you want to buy yourself a tasty treat like chips, chocolate or lollies or prefer a healthier option such as nuts, fruit or tuna, there’s something for every taste and dietary preference.
Some machines even feature instant noodles and microwave meals for those who would like something more substantial.
This initiative is part of our ongoing commitment to enhancing student life and wellbeing on campus. With these convenient and diverse snack choices, we aim to support your busy schedules and ensure you have access to nutritious and tasty options throughout the day.

Snakes!
Where?: Burwood, Waurn Ponds, Waterfront and Warrnambool campuses
What?: As the weather continues to warm up, snakes will become more active, emerging from their winter hibernations to enjoy the sun and search for a mate.
There’s no need to panic, but we urge you to remain vigilant, especially when moving near long grass or bushland and stick to designated paths when walking on campus.
Some preventative tips, when out walking:
- it’s best to be dressed in long and pants and shoes or boots
- make sure you see where you’re putting your feet.
What should I do if I see a snake:
- Especially if the snake appears agitated or has adopted a defensive or striking posture, it’s best to ‘freeze’ and stand very still until the snake has stopped posturing and moved off.
- Do not panic or attempt to run – sudden movements can startle snakes into adopting a defensive posture or striking
- Please report any sightings of snakes to campus security immediately by calling 1800 062 579.
- It is important to treat all incidents of snakebites as potentially serious. If anyone is bitten, dial emergency services on 000 immediately.
- You do not need to capture or identify what type of snake it is for antivenom to be administered. Snakes are protected under the Wildlife Act 1975 and it is illegal to capture, harm, disturb or kill them.
As with a lot of wildlife, act carefully and considerately and give them their space and we can co-exist peacefully with snakes as we all enjoy the warm sun.
Find more snake information on the Wildlife Victoria website.
Upgraded learning spaces!
Where?: Burwood Campus
What?: We are improving the teaching and learning spaces across multiple levels of Building B on Burwood Campus.
These upgrades will ensure spaces are inclusive and supportive of functional, welcoming and collaborative learning environments that foster outstanding teaching, learning, and student experiences, and contribute to our carbon reduction goals.
The project will be delivered in two stages to minimise disruption to teaching and learning activities and timetabling. To align with this approach, stage one of the project will commence in December 2024 and is expected to be completed in mid-2025, in time for Trimester 2.
During construction, you may notice learning activities have relocated to an alternative Building B location or another building on campus, therefore please take note of the room booking location.
You can stay up to date on the progress of this project on Bulletin Board.
