Show your support for our LGBTIQ+ community this Transgender Awareness Week
This Transgender Awareness Week is a time to celebrate and raise awareness of the transgender community and highlight the importance of Transgender Day of Remembrance on 20 November, which is an annual observance that honours the memory of trans lives lost to acts of transphobia and discrimination.
Supporting the trans and pride community is needed now more than ever. Let’s combat the rise in anti-trans discrimination with inclusion, education and pride. At Deakin, we aim to provide an environment where our LGBTIQ+ community feel included and have a deep sense of belonging so that they may thrive.
From the 2024 Respect and Wellbeing Student Survey, our LGBTIQ+ student community* has told us:
- 83% are finding university moderately, very or extremely stressful
- 36% reporting they were ‘not coping or coping a little’ with university-related stress
- Top four main stressors were academic workload and expectations, life balance, financial strain and mental health
- 79% feel safe to be myself at Deakin
- 90% are treated with respect by Deakin staff and 89% by fellow students.
*Total LGBTIQ+ students who completed the survey in May 2024, N= 755; 22% total students who completed the survey, N = 3,711.
This is more reason than ever to support all members of our student community, being involved in the activities for Transgender Awareness Week, and celebrating our LGBTIQ+ community!
