Works have started to protect and future-proof Waurn Ponds Campus

If you’ve been to Waurn Ponds Campus, you may have noticed the major works over the last few years to convert the chain of six ponds into functioning wetlands as part of the Integrated Water Management (IWM) plan. The IWM plan involves managing the different aspects of the water cycle in a holistic way and considering the role of water in creating healthy ecosystems and a sense of place.

The first phase of those works is now complete, bird netting has been removed from the top five ponds and the more than 69,000 new plants in and around the wetlands are helping to improve the quality of water flowing into Waurn Ponds Creek while also attracting wildlife to campus.

We are now commencing works on Phase 2 of the IWM project to enhance Waurn Ponds Campus. This initiative will focus on implementing essential stormwater interventions and Water Sensitive Urban Design (WSUD) initiatives, aimed at reducing flooding to protect existing buildings and infrastructure and ensure the campus is prepared for future expansions.

Project Objectives

IWM Phase 2 will build on the work completed in Phase 1 and expand the project’s scope. Key objectives include:

Key Interventions

The project will include several critical construction interventions across the campus, focusing on drainage improvements and addressing areas identified as needing enhanced stormwater management.

Timeline and Community Impact

From now until the expected completion in March 2025, you may notice contractors and heavy machinery in various locations across the campus to deliver these important improvements.

We’ll be working in a phased approach and overall, disruptions are expected to be at a minimum, however, any impactful works will be communicated to the Deakin community ahead of time.
