NAVIGATE: support for autistic students while you settle into uni life
If you’re new to Deakin in T3, welcome!
While you’re likely very excited to get started with your studies, we know that adjusting to university can feel a little daunting for everyone. There’s a lot to absorb and new routines to be established – including adapting to different ways of learning, and getting used to unfamiliar environments and people. It’s common for new students to feel overwhelmed at times and it can take some time to feel settled.
This process can be even more challenging for autistic students. That’s why we offer autistic students additional support through our NAVIGATE program.
What is NAVIGATE?
NAVIGATE pairs experienced and friendly student mentors with autistic students to support their transition to studying at Deakin.
Your mentor will meet with you for at least 30 minutes, once a week, for your first trimester. In your second trimester, you will have the opportunity to continue meeting with your mentor, and/or other NAVIGATE mentors via group sessions.
Your mentor is a student just like you, so they’ll be able to answer any questions and address any concerns you may have about your experience at Deakin, such as:
- using DeakinSync and other online tools
- finding classrooms and lecture theatres
- using the library, both on campus and online
- writing and submitting assignments
- linking you to study support resources
- getting information about Deakin clubs and societies
- using your student card
- simply needing to see a friendly face around campus!
