How we can assist you in distressing situations
Sometimes, it can feel like a lot is going on. In our personal lives and the world around us, many everyday things we take for granted are turning upside down.
As we enter the end-of-unit assessment period, it is essential to know that Deakin cares about your personal situation and wants you to know that there is a range of support services and resources to help you both within Deakin and externally.
If you need uni advice or support
- Contact Student Central first for tailored advice, referrals and support. Ask about your course requirements and other enrolment needs, including course and unit advice, full-time and part-time study options, and intermission and visa compliance advice. If you’re an international student, Student Central can also refer you to an International Student Support Officer to connect you with other key services at Deakin or in the community.
- Access our Study Support resources and programs to help you achieve your study outcomes and goals if you need more time to complete any assessment tasks or are worried about upcoming exams. In that case, the first step is to contact your relevant Unit Chair, who can discuss assignment extensions or special consideration options.
- Make the most of DUSA – Deakin’s student union can help you in a range of ways, including through student advocacy and legal services.
If you can’t locate loved ones living or travelling overseas
For help in this very distressing situation, you should:
- Use the SmartTraveller website to access advice if a family member or friend is missing.
- Contact the Australian Red Cross. They work as part of the International Committee of the Red Cross to help restore family links and find missing loved ones during conflict, war, or natural disasters.
If you need financial support
A range of financial assistance options are available. You can also contact a Financial Assistance Officer through Student Central to discuss your individual circumstances.
If you need health and wellbeing support
During such a challenging time, it’s vital that you look after your physical and mental health and wellbeing. If you’re in Australia, you can access the following services:
- Deakin Medical Centre – Free consultations with your Medicare card or Overseas Health Cover (OSHC).
- Counselling and Psychological Support – free and confidential support from qualified counsellors and social workers.
- Disability support is available if you have a disability, health condition, or mental health condition that affects your study or participation in university life, the Disability Resource Centre can provide information and services.
- Multifaith chaplains offer compassionate support to everyone, whether you’re religious or not.
If you are located at our GIFT City Campus, we encourage you to explore the health and wellbeing support services that are available.
If you’re located overseas, our Student Assistance Program offers free in-country support 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
The Red Cross offers a range of resources for dealing with emergencies, including coping with a crisis, and Beyond Blue offers a range of resources and support to assist the wider community.
