Hear Deakin BAP members stories from the US

Adyant Modi (Deakin BAP Co-President) and Roman Chumachenko (Deakin BAP Secretary), along with their Faculty Adviser Dr. Iliyas Yusoff, recently had the chance to travel to the United States of America to attend the 2024 BAP Annual Meeting. ‘The 2024 BAP Annual Meeting showcased BAP’s unwavering commitment to professional excellence, community service, and the development of future leaders in accounting, finance, and information systems,’ Dr. Yusoff said.

Highlights from the meeting included:

Tacking real-world problems

Adyant’s favourite memory from the trip was developing ‘actionable solutions’ for the community under tight deadlines in Project Run With It. He worked on a real-world case for the Coalition for the Homeless of Central Florida. ‘Teaming up with three incredible students from diverse universities across the US, we spent nearly 20 hours straight brainstorming, designing PowerPoint presentations, and refining our ideas’.

Inspiring keynote speakers

One of the standout moments for Dr. Yusoff was the speech by Richard F. Chambers, a renowned internal audit expert. Richard’s quote, ‘it doesn’t take a clown to audit the circus,’ underscores the fact that auditors can rely on their expertise, critical thinking, and knowledge of auditing principles to assess and identify issues, Dr. Yusoff noted.

Improving presentation skills

Roman led the Chapter Operations presentation focusing on ‘engaging professional development activities for member retention, covering the activities our society has completed and plans to run’. Roman also noticed the value of incorporating infographics to showcase metrics and outcomes.

Community impact day

Community Impact Day was a highlight for many attendees, embodying BAP’s mission to foster ethical leadership and social responsibility. This year’s event featured the ‘Reading Rocks’ initiative, a literacy-focused project that aimed to support local charities in the Orlando area, Dr. Yusoff recounted. Participants donated between 1,500 and 2,000 books, along with decorated bookmarks and stuffed animal ‘reading buddies’, to encourage a love of reading among elementary school students.

Building global connections

Adyant also appreciated that, ‘The speed networking session allowed me to connect with some of the brightest minds from different universities,’ and the other great opportunities for networking at the conference.
