Do you vape or know anyone who does? Are you curious about what vaping actually is? Learn more in our upcoming R.E.S.P.I.R.E – Resources, Education, Support and Prevention, to Inspire Resistance to E-cigarettes – Vape-Free Workshops!
More young people are vaping than smoking nowadays, putting them at risk for vaping habits and resulting addiction issues into adulthood.
- Vapes or e-cigarettes work via a heating coil turning chemicals into aerosols which you breathe in – and we have no idea what the long-term health consequences of this practice may be yet.
- It’s not always possible to know what you’re inhaling – analyses of vaping products have detected hundreds of different chemicals, including industrial-grade substances and heavy metals that are known to be carcinogenic to humans.
- Nicotine is often present in vapes, even if it’s not labelled. It is well established that nicotine is one of the most addictive substances we know of and is highly toxic to our brains and bodies.
Put simply, vaping is not something you, or those you care about, should want to get caught up in.
Come grab lunch on us and hear students’ experiences
Whether you vape or not, we encourage you to join one of our upcoming hybrid interactive R.E.S.P.I.R.E Vape-Free Workshops either online or on campus (Burwood or Waurn Ponds) for some fun creative activities and information about vaping, plus advice on how you can either cut down, quit or support friends and family to achieve better health.
And if you’re ready to give up, each workshop will also feature vape-drop bins: collection containers for you to dispose of unwanted vapes where they will then be safely transported and recycled by an approved processor (given vapes cannot be put in regular rubbish or recycling bins due to fire or injury risks). A win for the environment too!

These sessions have been designed by students, for students. Hosted by our friendly Wellbeing Ambassadors, we’ll engage in some fun activities and hear from guest speakers. We’ll talk stats and common perceptions about vaping in young people, hear from others about their real-life experiences with vaping, plus how you can seek support if you need health advice, help quitting or you simply want to look after others around you.
Best of all, everything is free! If you attend on campus, we’ll also provide you lunch and you might even score some of our giveaway goodies! Register now via Deakin’s Vape-free webpage.

Deakin says ‘no’ to smoking and vaping
These R.E.S.P.I.R.E workshops are part of our Vape-free Deakin project, being run in line with Deakin’s Student Health Promotion Plan 2023–2025 and supported by the Victorian Health Promotion Foundation (VicHealth).
Deakin is a smoke- and vape-free zone, which includes our campus grounds, buildings and carparks. This policy is to keep our community healthy and ensure a clean and enjoyable campus experience for all.
It’s not just Deakin taking this stance – all Victorian universities have similar policies. So, if you see someone vaping or smoking on campus, politely ask them to stop or butt out!
For more information about the dangers of vaping and resources to help you quit, visit our Vape-free Deakin webpage – remember you are not alone!
