Changes to on-campus EV charging in 2024
It’s been a free ride up until now with our electric vehicle (EV) charging stations at the Burwood and Waurn Ponds campuses – with no restrictions, costs, or time limits – which has been pretty great! That said, this was always intended to be a temporary arrangement as it has meant our first-in EV drivers were definitely best-dressed and many have been missing out.
How we’re making EV charging fair for all
As we roll out new EV charging stations at the remaining two campuses, Waterfront and Warrnambool, along with the steady increase in EV ownership, it’s now time to support vehicle turnover in EV charging spaces and create a more equitable experience.
As of January 2024, here is how EV charging will work at all Deakin campuses.
- EV parking spaces will only be available to EVs while they’re charging. If you fail to move your vehicle when it is no longer charging, you run the risk of receiving a parking infringement – and nobody likes those!
- There’ll be a cost of $0.25 p/kWh for the first three hours which you’ll need to pay via Chargefox. We didn’t just make this figure up; we conducted a thorough market scan of other chargers in Geelong and Melbourne and kept it in line with those.
- After three hours, it does get pricier at $1.60p/kWh. Again, this is in line with other chargers. For example, Tesla calls this an ‘idle fee’ to encourage users to vacate the space to allow the next person to commence charging, which we thought was reasonable; after all, we are aiming for a fairer approach.
Signage has been installed on our current EV charging stations to ensure users are aware of these changes. Also, look out for our brand-new chargers that will be ready in early 2024 at Waterfront and Warrnambool!
We look forward to being able to provide a better charging experience for all of our EV drivers in the new year.
