Deakin’s Sarbjeet Singh wins the 2023 International Student of the Year award!

Congratulations to Sarbjeet Singh on winning the prestigious Premier’s Award, International Student of the Year 2023, at the recent Victorian International Education Awards!

Sarbjeet SinghThe awards, presented by Study Melbourne, recognise the efforts and achievements of exceptional Victorian international students and alumni in the community.

Sarbjeet, who also claimed the International Student of the Year – Regional honour, was presented with his awards by the Victorian Minister for Economic Development, Tim Pallas (pictured), at the ceremony in Melbourne last week.

Hailing from India, Sarbjeet recently completed his Bachelor of Civil Engineering (Honours) at Deakin’s Waterfront Campus. Despite mentioning some difficulties adjusting to uni life in Australia during the COVID-19 pandemic, Sarbjeet has been instrumental in making uni life better for his fellow students and helping others in the wider community.

During his time at Deakin, Sarbjeet was elected Campus Coordinator for the Student Association (DUSA), where he started the Deakin Indian Club (spanning both Burwood and Geelong, it’s our biggest student club!) and organised a range of inclusive events, such as Pride Week celebrations, Harmony Week, and cultural festivals. His dedication to community service was also recognised by Geelong City Council’s Geelong Youth Award in 2023.

Sarbjeet has shown further passion and aptitude for leadership, establishing study support groups and becoming a peer mentor and Success Coach to help our new students settle into life at Deakin, all in addition to serving in ambassador roles for Study Geelong and Engineers Australia.

When asked at the awards ceremony what he thought his parents would say about his win, an elated Sarbjeet said he had given them a video call to share his good news.

‘They were all so excited, they just couldn’t believe [it] … that was the best moment of my life, definitely loved it.’

‘This is just the beginning, I still have a lot more to do.’

Congratulations once again on all your achievements, Sarbjeet! You can read more about what Sarbjeet is up to now in the Geelong Advertiser, and see highlights from the awards ceremony in the video below.
