Help new students and upskill as a BusLaw peer mentor in T3!
Did you find your first trimester at Deakin a bit daunting? If you remember that feeling and would like to help our Trimester 3, 2023 commencing students have a good start to uni life, apply now to become a Business and Law Peer Mentor.
We’d love you to join up – you just need to be a current student who has successfully completed four units with a WAM of at least 60.
Why should I join the program?
Peer mentors play a very important role in helping new business and law students settle into life at Deakin. As a peer mentor, you’ll also:
- extend your communication, cultural awareness and creative problem-solving skills
- develop leadership experience, and workplace-ready skills and behaviours
- expand your professional and social network.
These qualities will give you a highly competitive edge when applying for your first job after you graduate.
What’s involved if I become a peer mentor?
You’ll be available to meet with and support new students in weeks one to five of T3. You’ll attend training sessions and help with events that foster engagement with the faculty and wider University community.
Our mentors are recognised with Outstanding Contributions Awards, with 24 recipients in T2. Among this wonderful group, four mentors received $200 from Bendigo Bank for going above and beyond in the role: Shriyansh Maniar, Sharon Chu, Georgia Martin and Tahlia Lane. We asked Tahlia what she enjoys about being a peer mentor:
I love the social aspect of mentoring. While helping students, I’ve developed friendships and professional connections far beyond the program. It’s such a great opportunity for both experienced mentors and new students to get connected with peers in their discipline.
Sharon and Shriyansh (pictured with Dr Wendy Webber) have had a similar experience and enjoy supporting new students while making new friends.
I’m interested! How do I apply?
Applications for the T3, 2023 program close on Sunday 1 October. Visit the Business and Law Peer Mentoring webpage for more information and to apply online.
