International students, stay warm this winter with these awesome group activities!

Being an international student in Australia is about more than just studying – you should also experience life beyond your campus. While it may be a little chilly outside right now, there’s heaps of ways to get to know your adopted home – and make new friends at the same time.

Our CONNECT program for commencing international students has some great August adventures lined up. Everything is free and arranged for you, so just enjoy the sights and sounds of Victoria and make new friends along the way!

Tenpin bowling, dinner and shopping at Chadstone

Tenpin bowling is a great way to have some laughs and meet other students! You don’t need any experience for this non-contact and inclusive sport. It doesn’t matter if you hit a strike or the gutter – we’d love you to join us!

Dinner will be provided after the game, so there will be plenty of opportunity to chat with other new international students and share a bit about yourself. Afterwards, you can even go for a wander around Melbourne’s shopping capital and hunt for a bargain or two!

Travel together from Burwood Campus or make your own way to Chadstone to meet the group.

When: Friday 25 August, 3–5pm
Where: Strike Bowling, Chadstone.

Trampolining and rock-climbing at Bounce Geelong

Let your inhibitions go at Bounce Geelong, a massive indoor trampoline centre that lets you fly through the air and bounce off the walls! It’s all about fun, self-expression and human connection through physical activity.

You’ll enjoy two hours at Bounce, with the first hour hosted by staff who will run group activities and team-building exercises like trampolining, slam dunk competitions and dodge ball.

Then you’ll have a free hour to explore all of Bounce’s activities – including their amazing rock-climbing area! After you’ve worked up an appetite, refresh with some shared platters of food and chat more to the other students.

Travel together from Waurn Ponds Campus or make your own way to Bounce to meet the group.

When: Friday 25 August, 3.45–6.30pm
Where: Bounce Geelong

There are so many great ways to CONNECT!

Our CONNECT program gives you lots of other opportunities, including free health checks, come-and-try sport sessions and wellbeing workshops. If this is your first trimester as an international student at Deakin, we encourage you to try as many activities as possible – you’ll make new friends, practise your English skills, explore your campus, discover Deakin’s support services and learn about Australian culture.

You could also drop by the Lord Mayor’s Student Welcome, which is hosted by the City of Melbourne at the Queen Victoria Winter Night Market. This isn’t a Deakin-run event but it’s a great way to feel part of the broader international student community. It’s free and will feature live performances and giveaways, so check it out!

When: Wednesday 16 August, 6–8pm
Where: Queen Victoria Market, Melbourne
