Three Deakin students help the Australian Diamonds to victory in the Netball World Cup!

Australia has won the 2023 Netball World Cup, with Deakin elite athlete students and Diamonds stars Kate Moloney, Jo Weston and captain Liz Watson all playing a crucial role.

The Diamonds defeated the English Roses 61–45 to claim their 12th title in what was the team’s largest World Cup final victory in nearly three decades.

The emphatic result in Cape Town was a massive rebound following their defeat to the English in the tournament’s preliminary rounds. While the final was tied at 13–all at the end of the first quarter, Australia wrested control through Weston, whose defensive prowess halted England’s momentum.

The Diamonds then asserted their dominance for a halftime lead of 27–23 that only grew throughout the rest of the match.

The victory means the Diamonds now hold all of netball’s major titles. Congratulations to Liz, Jo and Kate on an amazing feat!
