Develop your leadership skills as you help new international students settle into Deakin life
Starting university is a big deal for anyone, but doing so in a foreign country can sometimes feel overwhelming. We want to help our commencing international students settle in and enjoy their time at Deakin – and that’s where you come in!
As an established Deakin student, we encourage you to join our Friday Friends program as a volunteer student leader, so you can share what you’ve learned during your time at uni.
How it works
The Friday Friends program is a series of casual one-hour social catch-ups held on campus every Friday for the first four weeks of Trimester 2.
These get-togethers help commencing international students to make new friends, ask questions about Deakin or Australia, increase their cultural awareness and language skills, and feel like they’re part of the Deakin community.
As a Friday Friends Leader, you’ll be matched with a group of new international students and will help support them during their first trimester. You’ll lead and guide conversations, share your uni insights and knowledge of Australia, and use your friendly and outgoing personality to ensure everyone is included.
We ask our Friday Friends leaders to commit to at least one trimester with the program – if you enjoy the experience, we hope you’ll take part in future trimesters, too!
Why you should sign up
Becoming a Friday Friends Leader is a great opportunity to enhance your CV and make new friends from all over the world. Plus, you’ll receive a free Deakin hoodie (*yes please*) and food/coffee vouchers when attending Friday Friends social sessions!
Apply now to become a Friday Friends leader! Applications close on Monday 26 June.
